Delicious Breakfast Fruits – Apples

24 Aug

You’ve undoubtedly heard the expression, an apple a day keeps the doctor away – They aren’t kidding. A raw, ripe apple contains vitamin A – an immunity enhancer that acts as an antioxidant, important in the formation of bones and teeth, preventative of eye problems, guard against heart disease and stroke, repairer of epithelial tissue (skin, mucous membranes…), protector against cancer and other diseases, and necessary for new cell growth. And without vitamin A, the body cannot utilize protein (the second category of nutrients on our list), also found in the apple.

An apple contains vitamin C – likewise an antioxidant, that is required for at least three hundred metabolic functions in the body, including tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland function, and healthy gums. It protects against the harmful effects of pollution, helps to prevent cancer, protects against infection, and enhances immunity. It also increases the absorption of iron (mineral catagory), which, you guessed it, is found in the apple. But wait, there’s more.

Apples contain Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol) – a happy family of eight antioxidant compounds that prevent cell damage by inhibiting the oxidation of lipids (fats) and the formation of free radicals, protect fat-soluble vitamins from destruction by oxygen and aid in the utilization of vitamin A.

And by an amazing act of Providence, vitamin C works synergistically with vitamin A and E, meaning that when theses vitamin work together, they have an effect even greater than the sum of their individual effects: Like when vitamin E aids in the utilization of vitamin A, or when vitamin E scavenges for dangerous free radicals in cell membranes, while vitamin C attacks free radicals in biologic fluids. These vitamins even reinforce and extend each other’s antioxidant activity.

Amazing, isn’t it? And that’s before even mentioning the vitamins K, Niacin, B6, Folate; minerals, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium; or Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, also contained in that common fruit.

Not only is the apple amazing for you body, health and healing, but, as I’m sure you’ve noticed its also great for your teeth. In addition to the aforementioned oral benefits, apples also contain the famous minerals Calcium – 7.5 mg, approximately, per 1 cup serving – and Fluoride. Yes, Fluoride, that nutrient applauded by dentists nationwide, is naturally found in apples, oranges, grapes, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, pickles, corn, beans, celery, cucumber and other fruits and vegetables.

Perfect [and inexpensive] Shampoo and Conditioner

29 Jul

To my best friend who just txted me, this is how it’s done:

1) Get two glass jars [or mugs or something] in one, put a tbsp of baking soda, in the other a tbsp of apple cider vinegar.

2) Fill the first one up with warm water and pour over your head with one hand while scrubbing your scalp and working it in with the other hand. Rinse well.

3) Fill the second with cooler water and pour over your head with one hand while scrubbing your scalp and working it in with the other hand [deja vu]. Rinse well. [Glitch in the Matrix.]

Et voila! You have gorgeous hair

naturally. 😉

On the go: It’s a WRAP

20 Jul

Wraps are a great food for on-the-go since they are easier to hold and eat while doing other things and their contents don’t fall out as easily as the contents of a sandwich will.

A great way to find a wrap recipe you like based on what you already have in your fridge, is to type “recipe wrap” into the Google search engine. Then, along the left hand side of your search results, you can select what you do or don’t have in your kitchen and Google will tailor fit your wrap to your desires:) Check it out by clicking here.

Eat up and enjoy!

ps. Coming up will be some of my favorite healthy wrap recipes:)

Recipe: Blueberry Cobbler

17 Jul

Filling:
Enough blueberries to cover the bottom of a nine by twelve casserole dish, a few tablespoons of lemon juice, vanilla to taste, a tablespoon of flour, and two tablespoons of melted butter.

Topping:
A cup and a half of rolled oats, a half of a cup of chopped almonds, salt and maple syrup to taste, and a stick of softened butter.

Sprinkle topping over filling and back in an oven preheated 375 for around 20 minutes or until done.

Enjoy with vanilla ice cream.

This is sugar free! And so healthy you could eat it for breakfast if you like. A delicious, guilt free desert!:)

Spring Clean Your Lungs

13 May

Take a breath and push all of the air out of your lungs till you can’t any more.

Breath in slowly.

Breathe out, again pushing all the air out of your lungs till you can’t any more.

Breathe in slowly.

Breathe out the same way once more.

And breathe in slowly.

You’ve now cleaned all the stale air out of the bottom of your lungs.

Happy Spring:)
